Sound: fixed-media, reversed and reflected recordings

Beta Reflections is a collaborative project by Tutu Tugçe Sönmez and Yasmin Rai. Tutu is an artist and sculptor, and Yasmin is a sound artist and composer. The duo formed through an open call for the MYOM collective, where they were selected alongside eight other creatives.
Beta Reflections unites sculpture and sound under a shared conceptual framework. The project explores the relationship between material form and temporal structure, allowing each practice to inform and expand the other. Through this collaboration, the work becomes a dialogue between physical presence and sonic experience.
Recently, Tutu completed a residency at Somerset House. Yasmin also has recently participated in residencies including Speculative Ecologies with LabVerde in the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil, and the Notations Festival at the Yerevan State Philharmonic in Armenia.

Beta II - light reflection study
Beta Reflections
Two standing speakers activate the architectural space. Beta Reflections employs alpha and beta waves as temporal structures, sharing a material logic with Beta II. With no clear beginning or end, reversed and reflected sounds shift between beta and alpha temporalities. Using recordings of a touch-activated clay sculpture, the fixed-media work allows the sculpture to sound itself, reverberating according to its dimensions and casting sonic refractions throughout the room. A panning light falls on the sculpture, pulsing in rhythm with the sound.

The Beta series explores heightened states of mental activity associated with beta brain waves. Each piece gives form to alertness, internal movement, and cognitive tension, inviting viewers into a state of inner navigation where meaning emerges through repetition, motion, and the search for resolution. Through this visual restraint, Beta becomes a space where thought is both contained and released. read more about Beta Series
Beta II represents the restless movement of the mind and the labyrinth of thought. Sculpted from black clay in a serpentine, neuronal structure, the work is hollow, yet it carries the physical weight of anxiety, focus, and mental strain.
Two open ends signify the passage between ideas and the infinite pursuit that extends from question to answer. Rotating elements reflect internal turbulence and a state of constant alertness. With no clear beginning or end, the open spiral form gives shape to repetitive cycles of thought.
Within this state of tension, Beta II signals an awakening. As thoughts find expression through material form, the Beta phase completes its cycle. Mental pressure dissolves, yielding to creative serenity and the peaceful void of Alpha waves.
