Clay, Glaze, Gold Lustre

You Are My Sunshine and the Apple of My Eye began as a detailed and fragile sculpture crafted with a sun like textured glaze radiating warmth. During the glaze firing, chaos struck as the form collapsed and rolled in the kiln to cause explosions which left fragments and fused pieces in its wake. Miraculously, the circular core survived while all intricate details were obliterated. Embracing this unexpected transformation, I crowned the piece with 24-karat gold luster to honor its new form.

The work is about rebellion, loss, and discovery. It is a story of imperfections and happy accidents where things fall apart only to come together in new and meaningful ways. This sculpture stands as a symbol of hope through its triple identity as a sun, an apple, and a survivor.
